Carl Kafka began his career in criminal law in 1987. After graduating from Boston College with an accounting degree, he entered law school planning to become a tax attorney. It was a single criminal law class at Tulane University Law School that changed his mind. He became fascinated with the nuances of criminal law, as well as the preservation of civil liberties.
In 1987, Carl was offered a position at the Miami Dade State Attorney’s Office. As a prosecutor, Carl started his career in the County Court Division and quickly rose through the ranks, first prosecuting juvenile delinquency cases and then becoming a felony prosecutor. In 1989, Carl was promoted to the Chief of County Court, where he supervised the prosecution of all of the misdemeanors in Miami Dade County, and then the Robbery Unit, where he prosecuted violent offenses. Carl’s last assignment at the office was as a chief of a felony division where he prosecuted mostly homicide cases.
In 1992, Carl opened his law practice in Coral Gables. Carl’s practice is completely devoted to criminal defense. Carl handles all state and federal criminal cases representing individuals and corporations who are being charged or investigated for criminal offenses. Martindale-Hubble awarded Carl with an AV rating, a rating that is given to attorneys who are ranked by their peers at the highest level of professional excellence for their legal expertise, communication skills, and ethical standards.
Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Carl has lived in Miami since graduating from law school. Carl is married to his wife, Lynne, who he met while they both studied for the Florida Bar. Together, they have a daughter, Dorothy, and son, Carl, Jr., both practicing attorneys in Miami. Carl is an avid tennis player and an accomplished sports photographer.
